Soz-Khwani: Songs of Lament by Askari Naqvi
The tale of Hussain's fate at Karbala told through an Awadhi storytelling tradition called soz-khwani.
1 July 2017
Literally meaning passionate recitation, soz-khwani is a form of storytelling & singing tracing its roots from the folk traditions of Awadh. This khwani was a musical expression of a lost battle against tyranny. Lawyer/singer Askari Naqvi laid his stirring baritone over melody, poetic descriptions and dialogues to tell a riveting story about the injustices of war and the tragedy of loss - Hussain's (Prophet Muhammad's grandson) death at Karbala.
Perfromer: Askari Naqvi
