Dialects of Old Delhi

A reading and discussion that put the focus on disappearing dialects of our city, Delhi.

9 June 2019

Dastango Fouzia and academic Saneya explored the ways of life and 'boli' (dialects) of micro-communities that once resided here, through poems and prose from Urdu literature. Their distinct speech, gendered idiolect and mannerisms were contextualised with a historical brief, followed by Fouzia narrating excerpts in Naayi (barber) ki boli, Karkhandari Zubaan, Dhoban (washerwoman) ki boli, Begumati Zubaan.
