Dancing Girl - Sujata Goel

A contemporary dance piece challenging dominant narratives of beauty and exploring the body in different physical states.

15 October 2016

In this piece, Sujata Goel presented a fictional character of herself. A mythical, doll-like figure continuously morphed through different psychological and physical states. Formally, the work explored the construction of gesture and meaning, employing a highly representational and stylised form that was simultaneously abstract. Politically, the work attempted to challenge the politics of exotica and a Eurocentric understanding of contemporary dance aesthetics.
