Mothers Won't Drown - choreographed by Meghna Bhardwaj

A solo dance performance that traced the physical and emotional landscapes of birth, using movement, knitting, and yarn as metaphors to explore the connection between a birthing body and emerging life.

23 November 2025

Meghna Bhardwaj brought to life an exploration of the natal in Mothers Won't Drown, an intense, intimate dance performance that traced the complex relationship between a foetus and the pregnant mother. Through fluid movement, close bodily attention, and the symbolic act of knitting with yarn, the piece navigated spaces of compassion, sickness, nourishment, resistance, play, and ecstasy.

The performance unfolded as a solo performed by Denis Barwa, blending dance, tactile gestures, and symbolic props to explore the oral and fluid-based connections that define early life. Yarn and knitting served as metaphors for the umbilical root, while moments of rupture highlighted the transformative potential inherent in birth.
